What's Got Your Attention?

We have a bunch of big readers at our house. All six of us love to dig into a good book or magazine. My son loves Nate the Great books. My daughters enjoy the Red Rock Canyon and Wally McDoogle books. My older daughter loves everything from Gone With the Wind to novels by Lynn Austin and Kristen Billerbeck. My wife is currently reading—and loving—Max Lucado's new book, Every Day Deserves a Chance. Beside my bed right now are the following:

The Prince of Tides - Pat Conroy
The Truth War - John MacArthur
Never Look Back - Kathy Herman
If You Will Ask - Oswald Chambers
Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky
The Gunslinger - Stephen King
Black Ice - Linda Hall
Oswald Chambers: Abandoned to God - David McCasland

What about you? What are you reading? Why is it so good...or bad?!

Reading: Lisey's Story--Stephen King and To Kill A Mockingbird.

I just posted a list of 13 books I want to read on my blog, so I think I might be going with that list until I get them all checked off.

You've got eclectic tastes, that's for sure! I think that's great -- very healthy and appropriate for an author, I am sure. Reading them all at the same time? -- that's a feat I can barely manage for two books. I do a lot of books on CD for my commutes.

I just finished reading "In Between" by Jenny B. Jones. It's a teen fiction title, but I thoroughly enjoyed it even though I'm not a teen. I haven't laughed out loud while reading a book in quite some time, and almost every sitting I was doing so reading this one.

It follows sixteen year old Katie as she adjust to her new foster family. I love how Jenny handles the humor in a way that doesn't discount the serious.

So ... parents of teens, you need to grab a copy of "In Between" for your daughters ... and you'll want to read the book yourself, too!

Pat Conroy is one of my very most favorites. I met him at a booksigning. He's a fine and friendly gentleman.

Presently, I'm reading a non-fiction, _Spymistress_ by William Stevenson who was "the man called Intrepid," if you recall that old book and movie. It's about the woman Ian Fleming called "the real M." I'm amazed to see how many pacifists wanted to make "a separate peace" with Hitler. No thanks to them--well, you know.

Margo, My old boss was Heyward Siddons, husband of author Anne Rivers Siddons. Well, the Siddons were dear friends with Pat Conroy. I met him at their home one time, long before I had aspirations to write fiction. Wish I could speak with him again now.

All of you, good input so far. I'm making a list!

Almost anything by Stephen King is good. The Dark Tower series is my favorite. The Dark Half was great too.

I try and read Christian fiction, but almost nothing catches my eye anymore (other than Darkstar and Full Tilt, and a few Frank Peretti books) I'm looking harder, though. I joined a Christian book club at my local library for teens.

Kayla, Based on the titles you like, here are some authors you may want to try in the Christian fiction realm: T.L. Hines, James Scott Bell, Mark Mynheir, Kathy Hermon (Never Look Back), Wanda Dyson, Randall Arthur, Melanie Wells, and Chris Well. Let me know if any of these ring your bell. And be watching for NOBODY in September! CM

Lately I've been 'Lost in a Good Book' with Jasper Fforde. If you like literary fiction AND alternate history/ fantasy/ science fiction, AND the classics, try his books. Way too funny.

Hey Creston!
Welcome to "blogland." LOL! I'm reading Brandilyn's book Coral Moon. Also in the pile are 20 Master Plots and Between the Lines (craft books), and The Unusual Supsect (Stephen Baldwin's story of coming to faith). I recently read the Plague Maker by Tim Downs. I enjoyed that one too.

Can't wait to read yours! Blessings!

Thanks for all the good suggestions. Dineen, that book by Stephen Baldwin (Unusual Suspect) was quite interesting. I appreciate Stephen's zeal for the Lord. Quite rad. His story (and mine) remind me of the text that says, "God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise...the weak things...the base things...the despised...the things that are not (1 Cor. 127-29)." God has taken a bunch of misfits to turn the world upside down for Christ. Amen!

Just gotta say how much I love that cover for Nobody.

Hi Vennessa!

The cool story behind the cover for NOBODY is that I was searching the Internet for great cover designers and found one whose work I LOVED by the name of Chris Tobias. When I mentioned Chris to the art director at Random House, he said, "We have a great working relationship with Chris!" Wouldn't you know, I was privileged to have him design the cover for the new novel, NOBODY, due out in Sept 07! Chris designed the cover for Max Lucado's new book, Every Day Deserves a Chance. You can see his work at http://www.tobiasdesign.com/.

I have really gotten on a classic mystery fiction kick ... works about the history of the genre, plus classics by Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Dorothy L. Sayers, Ellery Queen, and especially Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe series.

(In fact, on the way home from work tonight I stopped in at a used bookstore and bought the remainder of the Sherlock Holmes series.)
